Choosing a Superman Costume

As there have been many incarnations of Superman, you might want to base your costume on a particular actor or era: comic book Superman, Christopher Reeve, George Reeves, or TV cartoon Superman are all viable options. There have also been countless other supermen: Dean Cain, Tom Welling, and now Brandon Routh have all taken on this famous role. Superman typically has the same colour and style of costume. Lately Superman’s primary colour accents have all been more maroon, as with the new film.

The main difference is that George Reeves and the TV cartoon Superman don’t have many muscles at all (this could make for an amusing costume); their costume seems very simple to us now. Other supermen have muscles. Short of going to the gym, you could get a suit with built-in muscle, or order a muscle suit to go with your costume. This could also add to the hilarity of your costume, as would stuffing your shirt to create fake muscles.

Not only have there been many different versions of Superman, sometimes Superman himself dons a different costume! There is, of course, Superman’s mild-mannered alter ego, Clark Kent, the reporter at the Daily Planet. The most notable part of Clark Kent’s outfit is the thick black-rimmed glasses. Remember: these glasses have to be distracting enough so that Lois Lane won’t figure out that Superman is the same person as Clark Kent! Clark also typically wears button up shirts, and carries a pen and pad of paper to get the latest scoop.

Superman himself also sometimes wears different costumes. Superman, at one point, had a Man of Energy outfit that was electric blue (with a more jagged stylized S). You will probably not be able to find one of Superman’s alternate costumes at a costume shop, but you could put in the time and energy to make one. Unfortunately, Superman’s alternate costumes won’t be as recognizable, so most people choose to stick with Superman’s classic red, yellow, and blue uniform.
